About Blood Sugar
Blood glucose is measured either in millimoles per litre (mmol/L) used in the UK, Canada, and Australia, or milligrams per decilitre (mg/dL) used in the USA and many other countries. HbA1c reflects average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months and is reported as a percentage (NGSP) or in millimoles per mole (IFCC). The conversion factor is 1 mmol/L = 18.0182 mg/dL.
Did You Know?
- HbA1c measures the percentage of hemoglobin coated with sugar — higher values indicate poorer long-term glucose control.
- A fasting blood glucose of 5.6–6.9 mmol/L (100–125 mg/dL) is classified as prediabetes.
- Regular physical activity can lower both fasting blood glucose and HbA1c in people with type 2 diabetes.
