About Waist-to-Hip Ratio
The waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is a measurement of the proportion of fat stored on the waist and hips. It is a simple and effective indicator of body fat distribution and associated health risks including cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines abdominal obesity as a WHR above 0.90 for males and 0.85 for females.
Did You Know?
- Studies show WHR is a better predictor of cardiovascular risk than BMI alone.
- Apple-shaped fat distribution (high WHR) is more closely linked to metabolic disease than pear-shaped distribution.
- Waist circumference is best measured at the midpoint between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone.
