Understanding Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and is recorded as two numbers: systolic (top number) and diastolic (bottom number). Systolic pressure measures the force when your heart beats, while diastolic measures the force between beats.

Blood Pressure Categories

  • Normal: Less than 120/80 mmHg
  • Elevated: 120-129 / less than 80 mmHg
  • High (Stage 1): 130-139 / 80-89 mmHg
  • High (Stage 2): 140+ / 90+ mmHg
  • Crisis: Higher than 180/120 mmHg (seek immediate care)
